Journey Overview
Leave Khiva behind and journey deep into western Uzbekistan on a private two-day expedition through Khorezm, Karakalpakstan, the Ustyurt Plateau, and the disappearing landscapes of the Aral Sea.
This is far more than a visit to the Aral Sea. The journey brings together ancient Khorezmian history, Karakalpak culture, Soviet-era history, desert landscapes, archaeology, and the extraordinary story of one of the world's most dramatic environmental transformations.
On the first day, travel from Khiva to Nukus to visit the renowned Savitsky Museum before continuing to Muynak, the former fishing port whose abandoned ships now rest in the desert. From there, enter the remote Ustyurt Plateau and continue by 4×4 toward the Aral Sea. Spend the night at a traditional yurt camp near the Aral Sea, enjoy dinner, and experience the silence of the desert beneath the stars.
The second day begins beside the Aral Sea before continuing through the Ustyurt landscape to Kurgancha Kala, the abandoned Soviet-era settlement of Kubla Ustyurt, Muynak, the ancient Mizdakhan Necropolis, and Chilpik Kala, concluding with return drop-off in Khiva.

Climb Chilpik Kala, a 2,000-year-old Zoroastrian dakhma (Tower of Silence), before returning to Khiva for hotel drop-off.
